GeT MA: AN OVERVIEW

 

hu photoThe German-Turkish Masters Program in Social Sciences (GeT MA) is a unique, interdisciplinary, integrated Masters Program at the Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences (Institute of Social Sciences) at the Humboldt-Universität and at METUs Graduate School of Social Sciences. All students attend their first year of studies in Ankara and their second year in Berlin.

Courses in Political Science, Sociology and International Relations offer students a specialized perspective on politics and society in Turkey and Germany, German-Turkish relations as well as the European dimension of domestic and foreign politics in both countries. Furthermore, students gain practical experience through an internship in either Turkey or Germany between their first and second year.

 

 

metu photoUpon completion of the program, a Dual-Master of Arts in Social Sciences is awarded from both Humboldt and METU. The GeT MA prepares students for international careers in government agencies, NGOs, administration, journalism and in research.

The GeT MA welcomes applications from students worldwide who have obtained a BA or equivalent in a relevant subject and possess English and intermediate German language skills.

  1. B.A. or equivalent degree in any discipline of social sciences or humanities. [Students whose B.A. degree is not in social sciences or humanities, but who has a prior M.A. or M.Sc. degree in social sciences or humanities can also apply.]

  5. Two Letters of Recommendation. [Recommendation letters can be from university professors, language instructors, supervisors, advisors, or co-workers.]
  6. Any German language certificates, exam results, or transcripts you might have. [Students are NOT expected to have German proficiency during the application. They will be provided German language instruction as part of the GeT MA program. Students can take their graduate courses either in German or in English during their year in Berlin].
  7. CV (in English).
  8. English writing sample (1,000 to 5,000 words). [The writing sample can be any student homework, paper, senior thesis, or essay. It will simply be used to assess the written academic English level of the applicant]

 

Language of Interview: English and German

Date and Place of Interview: Admission interviews will be held both at METU, Ankara and Humboldt, Berlin. Students can attend either of the interviews. METU interview will be in June 2010. Exact date and place will be announced in May 2010 (METU campus map). For the date of the Humboldt interviews, please check with Humboldt University.

FEES and SCHOLARSHIPS

The GeT MA program charges tuition fees for the entire two year program, which amount to €2,500 per semester (a totoal of €10,000). Eligible students are offered full or partial scholarships.

 

STUDENT SERVICES

All GeT MA students receive comprehensive academic advising, but also have access to comprehensive student services. Students are assisted from the moment of acceptance, throughout their time in the program as well as after graduation as program alumni.

We offer the following to all students:

GeT MA Student Handbook detailing all information about the program including courses, grades, credit points, deadlines, etc. In addition, all information about finding housing, obtaining a visa, registering at each University and all other issues associated with studying within the program are also included.

Assistance is granted with the housing search in each city, obtaining the appropriate visa, registering at each University to avoid bureaucratic hassles.

Orientation takes place at the start of the program, but also at the start of each semester.

Open-Door-Policy: there is always a staff person at hand to help with student needs.

Social events: GeT MA students have the chance to meet other MA students and Doctoral Candidates through social events during the semester.

Alumni Network: a GeT MA Alumni Network will be created, but in the meantime, students will interact and be in contact with graduates from other MA programs at each Graduate School.

Further Academic opportunities: Students receive invitations to a plethora of events such as lectures, colloquia or conferences in Ankara and Berlin including those taking place at each University as well as their partner institutions.

 

GeT MA SUMER COURSE 2009

Berlin, August 31 – October 2, 2009

From August 31 to October 2, 2009, the German Turkish Masters Program in Social Sciences will conduct its Summer Course at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany. The course introduces its participants to issues related to the overarching topic of “Germany and Turkey in Europe.” Next to lectures, seminars and visits to numerous institutions and sites in Berlin, German language courses will be offered at a beginner and advanced level throughout the duration of the course.

The course is open to undergraduate as well as graduate students of the Social Sciences and related fields, who wish to intensify their knowledge of Germany and Turkey in Europe and the German language. A certificate will be issued to participants after the successful completion of the course. It is not possible to earn ECTS Credit Points in this course. The course language will be English.

Stipends to support participants in their travel and stay here in Berlin are available for the duration of the course.
